Owned by Virgil Gamach it has solid bittering properties and has one of the highest myrcene oil contents (60-70%) which gives it a very sweet citrus flavor and aroma that is closer to roanges than grapefruit. Amarillo actually means yellow in spanish which is a nod to the hop cones color while growing on the bine.

There is distinct flowery, spicy, tropical, citrus-like flavors and aromas of citrus (orange and lemon) that are reminiscent of Cascade but much stronger. There is grapefruit, melon, apricot and peach notes plus ripe banana and honeydew melon. There are also tart notes of grapefruit and lime but ultimately the predominant aromas are fruity with strong notes of apricot, peach, ripe banana and honeydew melon which give it a uniquely sweet flavor.

It is a great choice for American Style Ales, IPAs, Pale Ales, Juicy IPAs, NEIPAs, Hazy IPAs, Porters, Amber Ales, and Wheat Beers.

If you are looking for a substitute we suggest Amarillo® (GR), Cascade (US), Cascade (BC), Centennial (US), Centennial (BC), Chinook (US), Chinook (BC), Summer or Simcoe®.

Amarillo® is avilable as a Lupulin Powder/Pellets under Cryo-Hops or LUPOMax and is also available in a Hop Oil/Extract. Amarillo is also found in whole leaf form often. Cryo-Amarillo® is available here.

This hop plays well with lots of other hops and is notably used in conjunction with Citra®, Simcoe®, Mosaic® (HBC 369), Centennial (US), Centennial (BC), Columbus (US), Columbus (BC), CTZ, Cascade (US), and Cascade (BC) frequently.
