White Labs Belgian Strong Ale Yeast (WLP545) is from the Ardennes region of Belgium. It is a classic yeast strain that produces moderate levels of ester and phenolic characters. It is often described as dried sage and black cracked pepper. This yeast strain is ideal for high gravity beers due to its high attenuation that results in a dry finish. 

WLP545 Belgian Strong Ale Yeast is POF+ meaning that it will contribute phenolic characteristics to finished products.

It is a fantastic choice for use in Dark Strong Ales, Abbey Ales, and seasonal specialties like Belgian Holiday Ales. Not only does this yeast strain lend itself to these styles, it also works well in Belgian Blond, Belgian Table Bier, Biere de Garde, Dubbel, Saison, and Tripel.

Attenuation: 78-85%

Flocculation: Medium

Alcohol Tolerance: High (10-15%)

Optimum Fermentation Temperature:  66 - 72F


**This strain has been genetically typed in our lab using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Through this genetic testing, we have determined WLP545 Belgian Strong Ale Yeast to contain the STA1 gene (glucoamylase), a potential indicator of Saccharomyces cerevisiae var. diastaticus. Brewers yeast are natural hybrids, which make it possible for certain strains to display elements of the STA1 gene. These strains have the ability to utilize some dextrins (unfermentable sugars), resulting in higher levels of attenuation than what is considered typical.
