Whitbread Golding Variety, or simply WGV, is a UK grown dual purpose hop that has an alpha acid range of 5-7.7% and a beta acid range of 2-3.5%. It is not actually a true Golding variety and was derived from an old hop variety known as Bate's Brewers. It dates from 1911 and takes its name from its place of origin, which was then a farm owned by the Whitbread Brewery, in Kent, UK.

It is fragrantly woodsy with overtones of fresh garden herbs plus floral and green fruit (due to the good proportions of humulene and farnesene). It is more robust than many other hops and features a slightly sweet hoppy flavor - thick creamy caramel bitterness that comes across as almond like.

It features tea-like overtones and woody aromatic bergamot with sweet notes that also include honeydew melon, fig, dried fruit and nuances of Almdudler (herbal lemonade) and port wine that is slightly underscored by a spicy licorice aroma.

It is a great option for your Scottish Ales, Bitter, Pale Ales, Marzens, and Amber Ales.

A possible substitution for WGV is Fuggle (UK).
