The UK Version of Challenger which is occasionally seen as Wye Challenger is a dual purpose hop but is most frequently used as an aroma hop, with an alpha acid of 3.3-9% and a beta acid of 1.1-5.0%.
It has an aroma that includes spice, pine, fruit, cedar, green tea, and sweet fruit. It will add pleasant european style aromas with full bodied rounded bitterness with spicy cedar, green tea aromas and sweet floral flavor notes that are almost perfume-like with rose oil. All of this is complimented by sweet gingerbread, vanill and marzipan with discernible notes of banana. There is also some grapefruit, spicy wild garlic and juniper with woody cognac in the background.
It is recommended for use in English Ales, West Coast IPAs, Brown Ales, and Pale Ales.
Challenger hops can be subsituted with Northern Brewer (US), Northern Brewer (GR), Challenger (US), Challenger (BEL), Perle (US), Perle (GR), Target (UK), and Northdown (UK) with relative success.
