Opal (GER) (Spalt Opal)
Opal is a German dual purpose hop that is sometimes seen as Spalt Opal. It has an alpha acid range from 5 to 14% and a beta acid of 3.5-5.5%. It was bred from Hallertau Gold under the Cultivar/Brand ID 87/24/56 from the Hop Research Institute in Hull, Germany.
Opal has aromas of spice, pepper, citrus and an even dispersal of fruity floral and herbal notes. It is known for its sweet and spicy characters that provide subtle pepper and clean citrus flavors. There are spicy woody aromas of licorice and aniseed with notes of sweet apricot and flowerly jasmine. The notes of spicy woody flavor elements are tinged with light vegetal nuances.
It is a great choice for use in Pilsners, Hefeweizens, Helles, Lagers, Brown Ales, Saisons, Tripels, Wheat Beers, Kolsch, Blonde Ales, and Belgian Ales.
If you are looking for a substitute we recommend East Kent Golding (EKG), Tettnanger (GR) and Styrian Golding.
