Simcoe®

Simcoe® is a USA dual purpose hop that has a wide range of alpha acid possibilities, from 2.1 to 27.3% but is usually seen in the 11-15.5% range. It typically has a beta acid range of 3-5.5%. It is owned by Yakima Valley Ranches under the Cultivar/Brand ID YCR 14.

It is often referred to as Cascade on steroids and is frequently used for bittering due to the high alpha acids which give it a smooth bitterness. But don't let that smooth bitterness fool you it packs a punch of stone fruit, pine and citrus zest aromas.

Simcoe® is fruity and slightly earthy in its aromas with notes of grapefruit, passionfruit, pine and berry. It is known for its tropical fruit flavors and fruity aromas of blueberry, currant and blackberry on the forefront with sweet passionfruit, plum and pineapple notes. There are lime overtones across the board with this hop.

It is a great choice for use in IPAs, American Pale Ales, Pale Ales, Double IPAs, Lagers, Wild Ales, Red Ales, Wheat Beers, Saisons, and Ambers.

Simcoe® could be substituted using the following hops: Summit™, Magnum (US), Amarillo® (US), Mosaic® (HBC 369), Cascade (US), Centennial (US), Citra®, Columbus, CTZ, Tomahwak, or Zeus.

It is available in Lupulin Powder/Pellet form under brands like LUPOMax and Cryo-Hops. Occasionally it is availble in whole leaf hop form.

Simcoe® plays really well with other hops and is frequently used in conjunction with Citra®, Amarillo® (US), Centennial (US), Mosaic® (HBC 369), Chinook (US) and Cascade (US).
