Citra® is a dual purpose hop that is frequently used primarily as an aroma hop. It is grown in the USA and is owend under the Hop Breeding Company under the name HBC 394 (or X-114). It has an Alpha Acid of 10-15% and a Beta Acid of 3-4.5%. It is known as high alpha acid hop.
It has a strong yet smooth floral and citrus aroma and flavor that comes across as grapefruit, citrus, peach, melon, lime, gooseberry, passionfruit and lychee. There is a smooth bitterness and notable tropical fruit notes. While Citra® is known to be all about that citrus there is also notes of red currant, gooseberry, lychee, pineapple and a hint of lilac present.
It's a great choice for American Wheats, American Pale Ales, Pale Ales, IPAs, Double IPAs (DIPAs), Belgian Style Ales and Brettanomyces fermentations.
Citra® has been successfully subtituted with Simcoe®, Mosaic® (HBC 369), Centennial (US), Centennial (BC), Cascade (US) and Cascade (BC).
Citra® is available as a Lupulin Powder/Pellet under Cryo-Hops and LUPOMax brands. It is also available in whole leaf hop form frequently.
While many hops could be paired with Citra® it is frequently found to be paired with Simcoe®, Mosaic® (HBC 369), Amarillo® (US), Amarillo® (GR), El Dorado®, Galaxy®, Columbus (US), Columbus (BC), Centennial (US), Centennial (BC), Chinook (US), and Chinook (BC).
